The steepest ski runs in Chile

Cota ranking · November 2, 2026

We have ranked Chile's ski runs by average gradient: the vertical drop divided by the length of the whole run, not just its toughest stretch. That shows which run is steep from top to bottom. And Portillo sweeps the board: it takes four of the five spots, and its number one is 13 points ahead of the second.

  1. El Caracara60%
Portillo · It runs alongside the Cara Cara T-bar, drawn in black on the official Portillo trail map: 394 m of vertical drop over 651 m of run.
  2. Cóndor47%
Portillo · It loops around the highest T-bar on the east side of Portillo, which tops out at 3,349 m, drawn in black on the official trail map.
  3. Roca Jack47%
Portillo · It goes from the top of the Roca Jack T-bar down to its base, drawn in black on the official Portillo trail map.
  4. Las Vizcachas46%
Portillo · At the eastern end of Portillo, next to the T-bar of the same name, drawn in black on the official trail map.
  5. Pista 3645%
El Colorado · Black («Solo expertos», experts only) on the official El Colorado trail map, below the Cono Este lift.

How we measured it

Average gradient measured by Cota: vertical drop divided by the length of each whole run, from top to bottom, over the OpenStreetMap (OpenSkiMap) track and Mapterhorn terrain data (in South America, the 30 m Copernicus DEM). It includes marked downhill runs longer than 250 m on the official trail map, with no itineraries or off-piste. Cóndor and Roca Jack tie at 47%: the one whose toughest stretch is steeper goes first. On each resort's page you will also see the maximum gradient, which is a different measure. It may differ from the official trail map.

Those left out

Portillo's Super C, because it is off-piste: you hike up to it and it lies outside the resort boundaries. Runs 32, 26 and 35 at El Colorado (49%, 46% and 46%), which are drawn with a dashed line on the official trail map, different from the runs. And, by a whisker, run 27 at El Colorado, also at 45%: it loses the tie-break to run 36.
